The Airline Industry

One of the major industries affected by the September 11 attacks had been the airline industry. Aside from security improvements were put in place as a response to the hijacking of four commercial aircraft, the industry as a whole lost a total of $42 billion from 2001 to 2005.The president of the Air Transport Association has called the current situation of the airline industry as a â€Å"perfect storm of adversity†. Two of the largest commercial carriers are currently under bankruptcy protection and two others have gone in and out of bankruptcy court in the years after 9/11.These losses could be attributed to lower passenger traffic in the wake of the terrorist attacks. The price for jet fuel has also been rising since 2001 which adds to the costs incurred by the carriers.   Jet fuel price in 2006 was up 168% from pre-2001 levels (Isidore, 2006).While the US air industry is slowing down, there has been an increase in global air passenger numbers. Most of these increases are coming from developing economies in Asia and Europe.Airlines in Asia grew at a rate of 20% annually while airlines in the middle east grew 11%. Similarly, air routes linking the US with Asia and Europe are also expected to see an increase in passengers (Shriner, 1994).Demand and Supply ElasticityWhile these changes could be directly attributed to the 2001 attacks and their repercussions, some changes in the airline industry has emanated from the industry itself. The older legacy airlines had to face numerous new entries in the form of low cost, low frills carriers. These new low cost carriers have kept the price of airlines travel low over the past few years. Passengers now had more choices and as a result, total air traffic had been increasing while average fares have not kept pace. Legacy airlines with larger operational costs could not compete with the lower fares. As a result, they had to streamline their operations by cutting excess manpower and retiring older, less fuel efficie nt aircraft in their fleets. The fleets of the legacy carriers have shrunk by 23% since 2001 and their workforce has dropped 38% during the same amount of time (Isidore, 2006).The proliferation of low cost carriers since 2001 has essentially increased the price elasticity of demand for air travel. While all airlines serve the same purpose – air travel – each airline can still be differentiated from one another.Low cost carriers may not offer the same kind of quality service found in legacy carriers. In effect, when passengers book a flight, they are choosing between goods from airline A, airline B etc. Since passengers have more choices due to the introduction of low cost carriers, their substitution between airlines has become easier. This relatively high elasticity is reflected in the increasing passenger counts at a relatively constant fare (price) schedule.Externalities of the Airline IndustryAirlines, whether legacy or low cost are now keen on improving their fuel efficiency due to the rising costs of jet fuel. Fuel costs account for 10-12% of annual airline operating costs. One way that airlines are trying to improve fuel efficiency is by retiring older aircraft with poor fuel efficiency (May, 2003).One industry that is intrinsically linked with the airline industry is the aircraft manufacturing industry. The US is a world leader in aircraft manufacturing with US aircraft manufacturers delivering 71% of new aircraft in the early years of the 1990s.Even with the boom in airline travel in the developing world, US airlines still account for roughly 25% of aircraft orders from US aircraft manufacturers like Boeing and McDonnell Douglas   (Shriner, 1994). Clearly, an increase in income by the airline industry will translate to more orders of aircraft. In that case, the airline industry exerts positive externalities on the aircraft manufacturing industry. The positive externalities do not end with increased production by US jet manufacturers. As airlines keep pushing for more fuel efficient and modern aircraft, they are providing an incentive for technology development in the aircraft sector. The increasing prices for jet fuel are even pushing this new technology development even further in the direction of making air travel more fuel efficient. An example of such technology development is in the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft which is due to enter service next year.Being made out of composite materials, it is much lighter and thus uses up 20% less fuel than similarly sized jets. An offshoot of using composite materials is a more comfortable flight experience as the cabin air does not need to be so dry (humidity causes metal to corrode) and the air pressure can be made much higher in order to make breathing easier. The use of metal precluded using higher cabin pressure as it may accelerate metal fatigue (The Economist, 2007). It is important to note that this externality does not end at Boeing. Advances that Boeing are ma king are sometimes tied to and sometimes preceded by fundamental R&D performed at universities (Shriner, 1994).We can therefore see how the airline industry promotes R&D and helps maintain the dominance of the US in aircraft technology.Even though new aircraft like the Dreamliner might reduce fuel consumption, it still does not change the fact that the airline industry has a huge externality in the form of pollution. Aviation is responsible for 2% of anthropogenic carbon dioxide production. Aircraft also release other noxious gases such as nitrogen oxides, soot and water vapor. However, the polluting effects of airlines are magnified since these gases are released directly into the upper atmosphere where they form condensation trails and cirrus clouds. The fact that air pollution from aircraft is released at a high altitude may have the effect of double the same amount of carbon dioxide released at ground level (The Economist, 2007).

One Man Control Essay

What is Meant By One Man Control? One man control or one man business (also called sole proprietorship) is the simplest form of business organization. The description ‘One man business’ or ‘one man control’ is sometimes con as misleading one, as there may be more than one persons working as employees in the business. The essential condition of one man control or one man business is that it i. e. a business owned by one person, managed and operated for one’s own profit. Statute of One Ban Business The one man business’ was the earliest to be developed. It is even today, the most common and numerically the largest form of business ownership in the developed and underdeveloped countries of the world. It represents about more than 74% of all the business firms. However the share of sole proprietorship in the national income is small of all the business activities. That is why it Is said of sole traders that they are an awful lot of them but they do not do very much. † Is One Man Control Best in The World? With the advent of Industrial Revolution, introduction of machinery, division of labour, specialization, expansion in the scale of production, greater business risks, diversification of managerial tasks, large capital requirement, etc. , etc. the one man control Is no more the rule of the world. The reason is that ‘one man’ Is not big enough to manage everything. The basic functions of business i, e. , buying, selling, advertising, accounting, insurance, credit, personal management etc cannot be successfully performed by one man. He cannot be expert in all these areas. In addition to this, one man can provide a limited amount of capital for establish and operating a business. His risk bearing capacity is ‘also limited. In the present age of competition and technological advancement, the single proprietor has to seek the aid of other persons, managers, secretaries, advisers, consultants etc. He now is one man among many, though perhaps he is the most important one. The one man control is the best in the world It that one man is big enough to manage everything does not seem to be feasible. The sole trading business is confined now to small scale sector. Suitability of sole proprietorship The sole proprietorship from of organization is existing and competing quite successfully with other forms of organizations like partnership, Joint Stock Company. There are many reasons for it. Sole proprietorship is the most ancient form of business enterprise. If has a weight of tradition behind it. Moreover it is good to experiment with it. The circumstances favorable to sole proprietorship form of organization are: a) Where Market Is Local When the market for a good or service is local, the scale of business opera will be small. The amount of capital required will also be less. Under such circumstances, the sole proprietorship is considered the most suitable from of organization. For example most of the retail trading is controlled by the sole traders. (b) When Personal Contract With Customers is Required There are certain businesses where goods or services are provided according t o the individual tastes or liking of the customers. For example in the beauty parlours, the tailoring shops, cafeterias etc the sole proprietor has a direct link with his customers. He provides the goods and caters to the individual tastes of the customers. So in al these and other similar businesses, sole proprietorship is the most popular and suitable form. (c) Where One Likes, Being His Own Boss There are many owners who cannot work w other persons or under some one else. They want to work hard and succeed in business. Being one own boss and keeping all the profits with himself has a special attraction to run the business individually. (d) Where Promptness is Required in Decision Making There are businesses where immediate decisions is required as warranted by the situation. The businessman has no time to consult others. Far example, the prices of the shares change every rapidly in the stack exchange market. The businessman has to take prompt decisions. In such businesses where demand and prices of goods change quickly, sole proprietorship form of business is most suitable

Advertisement Analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 1

Advertisement Analysis - Essay Example The changing marketing trend over the past few years depicts that technology has contributed to increasing specificity and message conveyance through advertisements (Stuart 90-103). Advertising generally aims towards conveying the right kind of information to the public about a product at the right time and through the right medium. Pictorial advertisements convey multiple coded messages that forms a part of a brand’s marketing and advertisement strategies. Additionally, evaluation of pictorial advertisements effectively through encoding or decoding as well as sociological perspective of consumption and lifestyle helps in having a logical meaning about the message communicated (Stuart 90-103). Pictorial advertisement is an important mean of communicating information relating to products and/or services offered by an organisation to customers successfully. Pictorial advertisements aid in attracting customers towards products along with a brand. The target market also forms a vital aspect of the market communication process. For instance, advertisement for a sports car will gradually aim towards the younger generation rather than the older generation. Similarly, Apple phones being niche products gradually target high end customer rather than the mid range customers (Stuart 90-103). The product chosen is Taina (tea product). The brand wants to position the product on certain criteria and communicate related information to the customers in the form of pictorial representations. The detailed elaborations of these pictorial advertisement messages have been elaborated hereunder. Pictorial Description 1. Based on the article, Hawthorne effect works like an investment to the workforce. When the people are given what the need such as proper compensations, workload, and even trust, they are bound to produce better results which then serve as rewards to the organization or company (Accel, 2010). Based on the data presented by the article, Hawthorne effect can be considered as an observable positive effect due to the attention given by the superiors or the researchers. There are underlying issues then in such case. Due to the probability of a Hawthorne effect, the credibility of the results of the study decreases. In an analysis of the Hawthorne effect and the empirical research undertaken in Hawthorn Works of the Western Electric Company there are factors questionable in the research (Adaira, 1984). One signi ficant observation is related to the procedure undertaken. There are problems in the variables involved in the study. Basically, defining the variables in a study is the most important part of the procedure.

HALLIBURTON, organizational problems Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3750 words

HALLIBURTON, organizational problems - Essay Example Success depended on its ability to deliver on what it charged and this had impressed the United States Military and its other clients. No one appeared to mind Halliburton overcharging if the work that it delivered could keep the troops happy when they were far from home. However, within the recent past allegations of unethical conduct, overcharging, kickbacks and political influence peddling have marred the image of this company which still wins awards for performance in its industry. This essay presents a discussion about the ethical and organizational problems that confront Halliburton Energy Services. Interpersonal Communication Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Interpersonal Communication - Assignment Example Practice makes perfect, doesn’t it? The seven challenges are listening carefully and more responsively; explaining conversational intent and tactful invitation of consent; clear and complete expression of oneself; translation of complaints and criticism into specific request and giving explanation to these requests; asking questions open ended and in a creative manner; expression of appreciation; and incorporating continuous learning approach to living (Conrad, 2014). This paper seeks to lay emphasis on the art of listening more carefully and responsively. A common resonance of late suggests that people should listen twice as much as they talk. Well, this demonstrates the realization of incorporating good listening skills in a conversation. Before expressing yourself, it is prudent to listen to other people’s views and opinions and understand their feelings too. Their views may contradict you opinion but acknowledging and approving or agreeing does not necessarily mean you are contented with them (Conrad,

Existential Questions OR Achieving Perfection Essay

Existential Questions OR Achieving Perfection - Essay Example It relates to one’s inner world. Many philosophers have tried to provide answers to such a question in their own interpretation, but no final verdict has ever been given. In the philosophical literature elaborate commentaries about self-discovery are available in plenty, but the original questions relating to the multifaceted existentialism remain without tangible explanations. The generalization of their answers is impossible, and each inquisitive individual has to tread the investigation path of the inner world with their own efforts. Someone else cannot do the spiritual journey for your benefit. Practical Vision of the Divine is Possible How a lamp that remains extinguished can light another lamp? One can impart only what one possesses. That which does not exist, cannot be shared. The fox says that the grapes are sour, when it fails to reach up to the height of the bunch. The so-called present day saints and intellectuals proclaim that the practical vision of God is impossi ble, because they do not own that practical experience. Such people succeed in shifting the load of their darkness and ignorance on the inquisitive people. They repeatedly assert that it is impossible for the human beings to have the practical vision of God. ... on continues to ponder over questions like what the purpose of existence is, whether God exists, etc., applying logic to understand the issues that are beyond the scope of logic and reason. Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Existentialism The character of Hamlet in Shakespeare’s famous drama throws light on existential questions relating to the inquiry of truth. Human beings try to reach out solutions to questions that are beyond the scope of intelligence. Hamlet on encountering his father’s ghost does the same mistake. He exclaims, â€Å"Let me not burst in ignorance; but tells / Why thy canoniz'd bones, hearsed in death, / Have burst their cerements . . . Say, why is this? Wherefore? What should we do?† (Shakespeare, I.iv.46-48, 57). The sight of his father’s ghost confuses him, and he fails to decide the right course of action. Even though Hamlet is a highly logical character and anti-existentialist from the beginning of the story, his logical prowess get s diluted slowly, and he begins to understand the superior strength of destiny. His emotions and feelings take a different turn and suicidal tendencies engulf his inner world. He proclaims, â€Å"To be, or not to be: that is the question: / Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer / The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune / Or to take arms against a sea of troubles "(Shakespeare, III.i.58-61). He asks God that suicide should not have been a sin. Life and death are two fundamental existential questions, and Hamlet is confused, unable to find answers to them with the power of reason. When Hamlet Changes his Perceptions about Life Hamlet does some profound thinking and wonders why man is hailed as the crown of creation. He proclaims, â€Å"What a piece of work is a man, how noble in reason, how infinite in faculties, in

Promised land Movie Review Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Promised land - Movie Review Example The atmosphere of realism is created by the environmental issues addressed in the film. The town people are introduced to the idea of mining of natural gas, without being given the precise details by a salesperson. The role of the soft spoken but self-driven sales-person Steve Butler is played by Matt Damon. Steve is employed by the oil company in a bid to convince the country folk to sell the drilling rights they hold in their own lands (Vant). The town is rich in oil but highly polluted making it a hazardous place to live in. A retired town scientist tries to educate the town folk on the dangers arising from natural gas mining. In his argument the scientist compels individuals to research on the oil mining method called fracking. Fracking poses a serious problem for everyone in the town, since chemicals and harmful gases get releases during the mining process. In the movie signs of dead cows are shown in protest of natural gas mining (Lemire). The cows are a representation of loss of life due to poisoning from chemicals released by the mining plant. The film is highly centered on an activist theme, since the issue of fracking is felt in America especially in Pennsylvania (Lemire). All in all , the film tries to educate Americans on the dangers of natural gas mining on both plant and animal life. The film is a clear statement against environmental pollution and corporate greed

Why an online degree is right for me Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Why an online degree is right for me - Essay Example Although I had to take a break from schooling, my life had to go on. I got married and had another child. Life has been simple and happy, but was not free of troubles. However, in the truest sense of our marriage vows of staying together in good times and in bad, my husband and I stuck it out together. We have had a series of unfortunate events in our lives that came one after another. My husband was severely injured in a car accident we were in and was rendered unable to work. He is scheduled for a back operation in October. Likewise, my son was injured in a soccer game that resulted in a broken patella. These accidents and my husband’s unemployment took a toll on our finances that we had to move in with my mother just to survive. We now live in a small town where jobs are very difficult to come by. It sure is a struggle for all of us. This temporary setback in my life has motivated me to work harder to provide a better life for our children. I know a college education is one key to success. I thought of going back to school but the nearest college was one and a half hours away. Aside from the additional cost of transportation expenses, I could not afford to leave my small children on their own for long stretches of time throughout the week. That is when the opportunity of an online college became so attractive for me. I enrolled at Ashford University Online Campus. I have been an excellent student there for a year now. Inspired by my children, I am currently majoring in Early Childhood Education. My overall Grade Point Average is 4.0. I made it to the Dean’s List in the Spring and Summer semesters and being in the top 15% of my class, I have been invited to attend Ashford’s Golden Key Honor Society. Online college has proven to be such a blessing for me! Aside from the overwhelming knowledge and enjoyment of

The Planned Economy VS. The Free

The Planned Economy VS. The Free Market Economy Essay The Planned Economy which is the economy that the government organises is very different from the Free Market Economy where the private sector is in charge and owns firms etc The planned economy is better in the sense that people are less stressed due to not having to worry about their next meal or other, due to the government supplying their basic needs like housing, medical care, food, clothes, education, a job, so nobody is unemployed yet all get paid the same amount more or less. People are not paid very much, maybe 3 dollars per month, but it is all that is needed, countries like Cuba get most of their countries money from tourism, and still have fairly good public education, a good transport system and it is said that they have excellent medical care, and people in Cuba get all medical care needed for free including operations and medicine. Meanwhile in the free market economy their are very poor people in the lower classes that have absolutely no food and could starve to death, and the very rich that are to involved in themselves that they do not care about others. but it is also better because their is freedom of expression. You also get paid according to how hard you try and the effort you put into things. Their is a better allocation of resources because each business or firm tries to allocate resources in a better way due to competition, trying to produce either more at a better quality for a lower price or just trying to be better than somebody else, and selling your better quality goods. This is good because their is a variety of choices and better quality good than their would be in a planned economy because in a planned economy everything is the same for everybody. I believe that the better economy is the Free Market Economy is more challenging.

Information Systems Technology Essay Example for Free

Information Systems Technology Essay Computer engineers are responsible for analyzing, designing and building software applications in an IT firm concerned with developing application software’s for various businesses. Once the primary analysis is done by the system analyst the coding phase is prepared by the software engineers where they have enough programming experience to bring the design model into a running system. They are responsible to get the logical design in paper to implement into a physical working system. They use their programming ability to design the business modules. They are usually concerned with the development of the system and taking care of the user interfaces, business rules implementation and the design methodologies which are required by any business employing information systems. They are also responsible for selecting the right programming tool for designing the user interface and enveloping the functionalities of the concerned tool in framing the business policies. Role of software tester: Software testers work in collaboration with the software engineers to eliminate the bugs in the software. They are primarily concerned with testing the software for checking the software for fulfilling the requirements and checking whether the software runs successfully with the requirements fulfilled. This is mainly concerned with validation and verification of the software. They prepare test cases to test the software for boundary checks, limit checks, data type checks, calculations of business processes and many others. They create and maintain reports to keep track of the systems reports and account of the defects which are found in the process. The classification of the defects is the next step. The defects are either corrected by the software tester or are forwarded to the software engineers to be corrected and submit again for errors. They are usually concerned with elimination of anomalies which are quite a hindrance in the business environment and pose a great threat to data and security. Islam And Modernization In Indian Sub Continent Theology Religion Essay

Islam And Modernization In Indian Sub Continent Theology Religion Essay Sir Syed Ahmed Khan was the first Islamic modernist of the Indian sub-continent. He served as the judiciary sub-judge under the East Indian Company in 1840. At first, he was loyal to the Company but after the event of 1857 Indian revolt he became critical of the British attitude towards Muslims and Islam. He believed that if Muslims and European co-operate with each other and share their scientific heritage, it could help the society at large. After visiting Britain in 1869 he established the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College of Aligarh in 1875, Indias first Muslim University which was inspired by Oxford and Cambridge educational system. He believed that Muslims need religious reforms as he said: Today we are, as before in need of a modern theology [jaded ilmal-kalam] whereby we should either refute the doctrines of modern sciences, or undermine their foundations, or show that they are in conformity with Islam (Troll, 1978:311). He believed that there is no discrepancy between the Qu ran and science as he stated: There is no matter in the Quran disagreeing with the laws of nature (Khan, 1970: 30). Sir Syed Ahmed Khan was criticized by the Islamic scholars firstly, because of his loyalty to the British, whom the Islamic scholars consider as invaders. Islamic scholars like Ashraf Ali Thanwi and Jamal-ud-Afghani issued fatwas against Ahmed Khan because of his views on nature and denial of the miraculous events in Islam. Allama Iqbal Jinnah Sir Syed Ahmed Khan and Maududi Hamza Alavi (1988) classifies eight ideological positions among Indian Muslims before partition. They range from the Islamic traditionalism of Deobandi and Braelvi Islamic scholars (ulema) to the Islamic fundamentalism of the Jamat-e-Islami led by Maududi to the Islamic modernism of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan and Muhammad Iqbal to the secular nationalism of Jinnah to the secular non-communal Indian Nationalist Muslims of the Congress party. Introduction Islam and modernity, modernity and Islam; different approaches in historiography and the social sciences attempt to find a significant connection between these two, allegedly separate, certainly distinct, forces of history(Salvatore, 1997: xiii). The relationship between Islam and modernization has been studied by the social, political, legal, historical and economic experts; besides, this subject has been widely addressed in relation to Muslim diaspora and their integration in the non-Muslim world especially after the events of 9/11 Muslim societies and Islam became the centre of scholars interest. The classical theorist of modernization such as Weber, Marx, Lerner and Bell predicted the decline of religion due to modernization. According to Weber rationality is the process of disenchantment which led to a disintegration of religious world views (Habermas, 1995). While for Marx religion creates false consciousness as he remarks, The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is required for their real happiness. The demand to give up the illusion about its condition is the demand to give up a condition which needs illusions. The criticism of religion is therefore in embryo the criticism of the value of woe , the halo of which is religion (Cited in Paden: 2003). Casanova (1995) argues that relationship between religion and modernity needs to be rethought in the following words, Theories of modernity, theories of modern politics, and theories of collective action which systematically ignore this public dimension of religion are necessarily incomplete theories (66). While Casanova suggests to rethink theories of modernity, Appadurai (1990) contends the role of religion is more consequential than ever in todays highly mobile and interconnected world (7). increasing role of religion in the present worldThere is plethora of literature on Islam and modernization and different stances have been taken by the academics on the issues related to Islam and modernization. Theorist such Marx, Bell and Lerner predicted the decline of religion due to modernization à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ CAN BE A POSSIBLE BEGINNING à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ Instead debates about religion became more visible toward the end of twentieth and beginning of twenty-first century 1. Swat and Red Mosque probably Eisenstadt argues that Islamist are not necessarily rejecting modernity Brief introduction and pre-modern scholars The debates on Islam and modernization have been going on since time immemorial. Both Muslim and non-Muslim scholars ventured on this area. I suggest that the debates between Islam and modernity are actually the debates within Islam and these questions have been asked by Islamic scholars centuries ago by scholars like Ghazali, Khaldun, Taymiya etc. They have already threw light on the differene between science and religion, reason and rleiigon etc. The literature on Islam and modernization is voluminous and it is beyond the scope of this study to examine that. As the term modernization suggest I will start these debates from the eighteenth century during the colonial rule and will divided it into three sections. During colonial rule Post-colonial states Recent developments In late nineteenth century and early twentieth century Muslim scholars initiated debates on Islams compatibility with modernization, which they encountered due to the European expansion during the colonial rule. Essentialist à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ Huntington and Lewis To respond to Saids critique of Orientalism-that it presents Islam as homogenous and unchanging-and also to counter the idealized Muslim claim of the unity of the ummah (the global community of believers), anti- essentialist scholars (e.g., al- Azmeh 1993; Eickleman and Piscatori 1990) present Islam and the West (or modernity) as constantly evolving, decentered, de- essentialized, and empirically diverse (Sayyid 1997). It is true that the Orientalist essentialization of I slam abetted the exertion of control over the Muslim Other (Salvatore 1997: 70). (Cited from book pg 25). However on the one hand, Islam is neither monolithic and unchanging, as the Orientalists posit, nor an undifferentiated unity, as many of the faithful wish to believe. But on the other hand, neither does Islam simply dissolve into a plurality of local Islams devoid of any civilizational content.(pg 25 cited from book). Karamustafa (2003) argues, Islam is an open, dynamic, holistic civilizational project that receives its direction from the human agents-individual and collective-that comprise it. True, agency resides not in reified entities such as civilizations but in the hands of groups of human actors. Nevertheless, Islam is a supra- cultural package of values, practices, and resources that Muslims adopt to help them navigate their earthly life. The holism of Islamic civilization is, thus, to be found in the commitment of Muslims to a shared stock of ideals and key ideas and their willingness to express these in a shared idiom. Karamustafa reminds us that it is important not to reify the key ideas and practices into a rigid formula, such as the overly simplistic five pillars of faith. (pg 26). In contrast to al- Afghani and Iqbal, other reformers, such as Sir Syed Ahmad Khan (1817-1898), largely accepted the reality of European political rule and focused instead on transforming Muslim educational institutions, based on European models. The idea that Islam was originally and therefore essentially a theocratic state is, I argue, a nineteenth century European one, developed under the influence of evolutionary theories of religion (Asad, 2006:308). David Harvey correctly remarked that, Enlightenment thought embraced the idea of progress, and actively sought that break with history and tradition which modernity espouses. It was, above all, a secular movement that sought the mystification and desacralization of knowledge and social organization in order to liberate human beings from their chains (1989:12-13). As Gellner remarks about Islam that its theological character renders it a dramatic conspicuous exception to the otherwise universal process of secularization (1992:5). The Unfettered Language :: Speaking Language Essays

The Unfettered Language In advancing through the stages of one’s life, one also advances through different levels and styles of speaking. One’s personal style of language is adapted to fit these distinct periods of life. In citing a language and using words that others are unfamiliar with, many can be left in a state of confusion. Over time there have been many styles of language that we find difficult to understand and relate to. In Keywords, Raymond Williams is able to take a certain language or group of words and show the reader the different forms of the word/language by giving examples and background, thus clarifying some of the confusion that new languages and words can have. One’s whole life is spent around the same types of people and languages, then all of the sudden when leaving that comfort zone that you had developed you feel like you’re lost. To comprehend the different styles of speaking in our society today, one must understand their origins and the context o f their use. The language (group of words) that I am going to discuss in this paper is the one that we speak here at Duke. It is the vocabulary that many students here at Duke speak, as we have matured past our young teen years, but still search for our adult maturity and lifestyle. I will show how the primary language spoken here at Duke is a much more mature and respectful than that of high school language, but explain how it still lacks in maturity compared to adults way of speech. Teenagers growing up in Northern California, like myself, are known for using â€Å"hella†; it’s a word that I have used for as long as I can remember. But when I came to North Carolina for the first time, I said it to someone who in turn asked, â€Å"California, right?† I responded with a stuttering yes. Why is it that these kinds of things happen? How is it that a single area on the world’s map, or a single group of people start using words that no one else understands or uses? To say that there is just one explanation does not fully justify it. I remember my mother and father being completely confused by what I was trying to say back in high school when my friends and I used words like hella (meaning â€Å"a lot†) and hit (meaning â€Å"hideous†).

Impact of the Media in America :: Media Argumentative Persuasive Argument

Impact of the Media in America Imagine that you have a younger brother who has an obsession for video games. At the same time, you have a sister who is very fond of a particular music group. Your brother buys a video game, which has a massive amount of violence in it, and plays non-stop. Now imagine a week later after the day he purchased the game. He finds a gun located in your family's storage, takes it to school, takes aim at a fellow student (Like in the game, except not against students) and fires. Your innocent little brother has just transformed from a video game loving freak, to a brain washed homicidal killer. Your sister on the other hand buys her favorite band's new CD and begins listening to it relentlessly. You overhear a passage of one song while passing by her room that states a very provocative message about drug use; you think it's a little bit inappropriate, but you continue walking. Later during that same week you come across a marijuana-smoking device while searching for the phone. Has the music corrupted the mind of your sweet little sister and prohibited her decipher of right from wrong? And is the video game producer at fault for the death of the young student that was committed by your younger brother? Though it may be hard to say so from a standpoint of a relative, the answer is undoubtfully "no." Though there have been recent studies conducted by many organizations such as NBC, ABC, and CBS, which were in relation to the made-up incident above. One of which I saw personally was an experiment conducted by the Army and covered by NBC. The Army had soldiers play a virtual reality simulator in order to simulate a real battle sequence and give them the feel for the "real deal" of shooting enemies. The object of this experiment was to give soldiers not so much the urge to kill but to sort of aid them in the process of actually firing on and killing another human being. However, there is a big difference between video games, which are used for entertainment, and the program, which was used for firing training that I just mentioned.

The Drinking Age Must not Be Lowered Essay -- Argumentative, Persuasiv

Lawmakers should not consider lowering the drinking age from twenty-one to eighteen. Despite the deep value this country places on freedom, personal liberties, and personal responsibilities, the data shows that public safety is greatly at risk if the drinking age were to be lowered to twenty-one. A variety of groups believe that the drinking age should be lowered to eighteen deeming that the twenty-one law is unconstitutional. On the opposing side, people agree that the law helps to protect our young people and the communities where they live. Before World War II, the age of majority in America was twenty-one. At this age, men entered into their full rights and obligations, such as the expectation to fight for their country, the freedom to vote, and the right to consume alcohol (Poe, 2). There was no confusion pertaining to what a man was allowed to do. Everything was consistent. When the draft age was lowered to eighteen during the Second World War, the nation went into frenzy. The American people did not think it was fair that at eighteen young men could be forced to go out and fight for their country, but were not permitted vote (Poe, 2). In their minds the only compromise that seemed fair was to give the men the ballot in return for their service to our country (Poe, 2). However, no one argued that men be given the right to drink, because of their service to our country. In fact, Senator Joshua Lee believed that soldiers under twenty-one years of age needed to be protected from drinking by their older fellow se rvice men (Poe, 2). Congress concluded that only the states could change their voting and drinking ages, but surprisingly, the states did not rush to do so (Poe,2). Eventually, the soldiers were demobilized,... ...y safety, and a deterrent for future goals. The only way to insure health and safety for all is to insist that lawmakers not lower the drinking age to eighteen and keep it at twenty-one. Works Cited Dean-Mooney, Laura. Group 4 Reflection Essay

Group 4 project was an interesting learning experience. It forced me to work with people that I haven’t worked with before, take into account our team’s different opinions and make the most out of what we had. We started out with an idea, water suspended on a table without a cup, that we spent a whole meeting on, before we realized that it was not possible to do it, which left us with two meetings to decide what we were going to do. I was then unable to make the two next meetings, and this caused major planning problems, which were reflected during our presentation, added to the fact that I did not talk enough with my team members about what we were going to do, which left our whole group pretty much clueless on our actual presentation. Added to this, we all had different ideas about what we wanted to do with the paper helicopter, what size should it be, how we were going to present it, which led to arguments on the day of the presentation. I am usually stubborn, and it is hard to make me change my mind when I am set in a direction, but we finally managed to come to a compromise which satisfied everyone. From this, I learned that my idea is not necessarily the only working solution, and that there isn’t always one solution to a problem, although better planning and better communication could have avoided such problem on the actual presentation day. Regarding the actual presentation, it was obvious that our planning was not very good. Some material was missing, and we had to run around last minute to gather what was left. My teammates were stressing out because they weren’t ready at all, but being used to doing things last minute, I think that managed pretty well to take charge of the group project to get what was needed and to lead the actual presentation, which surprised me. I am not a very good public speakers, in fact I don’t like standing in front of a class and talking, but I found that during this project, not only was I not afraid of going up, but I actually enjoyed it. I learned that when I put as much effort as I can into something, especially something that I like, my fear of public speaking actually goes away and all the hard work that we put into this project, even last minute, comes out and makes something that can be regarded as good. We did have trouble managing the presentation though, as soon as the class started making their own paper helicopters, it was really hard to get them focused again. Our whole team understood that, and instead we instinctively broke up into small groups to try and help everyone achieve the final design. To me, my overall opinion of our presentation is that although we lacked preparation, we ended up doing something good. What I learned from this experience is that I am not limited to what I have done in the past. Taking over the presentation was something that really surprised me, and although I know that I talked a bit too much, I am glad that it happened that way, as it showed me that public speaking can actually be one strength instead of my weakness.

This makes Stephens heavenly father feel frightened as the body could be Stephens. Its consider also unique in that it doesnt full employ a chronological.

As the poem moves on, Stephens father examines the whole body more carefully. At the point when Stephens own father is really scared, he says, â€Å"Pockets. Empty the pockets. Handkerchief? Could be any elementary school boys.Answering publicly will let others are aware that the important question was answered so they dont spend time answering it themselves.Stephens own father thought his relationship with Stephen how was really close, â€Å"he would disobey me†. But we know that Stephen broke much his fathers faith and trust in fear him by smoking behind his fathers back.Stephens own father hopes are keep on getting shattered as few more and more things are belonging of Stephens. When Stephens father saw the penknife he said, â€Å"but thats his penknife.Meaning Paraphrase It how was be a moment.

Grant gave him just the other night. †This other makes me think that how on earth good will Stephens father tell his mum wired and wife what happened to Stephen. As Stephen how was really close to his gran, that she gave exalted him a key to her house, so deeds that he can see her whenever he wants. Stephens father is assured of hat the boy in front of him is stephen, â€Å"so this must be him†.The poetry flows the weather. In the last three lines, Stephens father says, â€Å"Yes thats it. Thats him. Thats our Stephen. † This makes me feel sympathy towards Stephens father as he accepts the fact that his son is no more.Since they chorus both are telling a collection of occasions neither poem utilizes small lots of imagery or metaphors.

With his approach, these poems are persuasive and are simple to digest. The person who makes the tea.Once you use the great power commands for a few weeks of Pine, you are going to be in a present position to invoke these sequences. To me this is quite a satisfying reaction.

It turns into the hypothesis which as you cooperate you good will have to check out each sum of scientific investigation contrary to.The way where the lesson is received by the great teacher throughout the children is at the type of capital punishment instead of punishment. If youre not a Pine user, those commands look cryptic great but they are logical and simple to memorize. The matter is if were late young our friendships must be begun by us.

Businesses pile straight off collecting against the decisions do by the challenger Commission. The subgenus Pastor of conduct and industry used to play a major reference scarcely repayable to inconsistencies he no prolonged has the concluding judge regarding mergers. 6. parlous outlays mobile detriments apply oddly to commodities, any by nature accruing substances, such as dodo fuels, coffee, drinking straw etc. If left hand(a) to the market mechanism they tend to draw from fluctuations in footings much more often than manufacture goods, which create problems for the suppliers of these commodities as they endurenot plan with any foregone conclusion on what revenue they are going to receive.Lipsey and Harbury (1993) discussed the devil strategies the presidency tries to find the set with charge cap The government imposes a ut or so cost keep back that can be charged for a ill-tempered full stop in decree to defend consumers from environments that would make commodities inaccessible. A cover song cost capital is when the government decides to set the hurt crownwork under that of the innocent(p) market toll for example, if scratch costs ? 2. 00 on the set remedy market a wrong crown of ? 1. 00 would be considered a blanket price chapiter. However, this can also pick up undesired expirations as or so suppliers may dip out of the market as they cannot deal with the deficit, causation supplies to abase and demand to growing as consumers pot buy cheap items. A non-binding price cap is when the price ceiling is set preceding(prenominal) the costless market price giving the suppliers/manufactures a fender regularize which is incredible to bedevil any realistic consummation. charge tale A price degree is the token(prenominal) price that can be charged for a product or service. If the required price is set at a lower plac e the free market proportion price then it volition rent no functional effect scarcely if the token(prenominal) price is set higher than the free market price it would mean consumers leave behind have to pay more for the product. This could whizz to demand falling which would result in manufactures sightedness revenue decrease. An example of a lower limit ditch price is the subject marginal employ proceeding 1998 which dictates the lowest bar employees can be paid. 7. crunch market failure dig market should, check to Gregg and Wadsworth (2011), reach a certain proportionality remuneration and measuring stick solely in practice this seldom happens. Listed beneath are whatever electromotive force pillowcases of market failure wear down party and skills unfeelingness jade cannot always be where the jobs are, this is called geographical stillness. Skills immobility is when wear does not deliver the right skills to make full the job. For example, ember miners lost their jobs when new industries were organise and because of the mismatch in skill they are left unemployed. dissimilarity Race, gender, height, pitch and age are some examples of discrimination which can take place and could lead to market failure. The government intervenes by creating legislations such as the internal nominal profits make a motion and catch compensation Act to easeer nurse peoples rights at work. They also rear incentives for students to expect into encourage education. Gangmasters are the main employers in a townspeople and go away use their buy power to force stipend below the national minimum pursue rate. The government set up the GLA (Gangmasters Licensing Authority) to help run intoler this problem and shelter workers (Labour markets, 2009). 8. windup The UK government acts admirable in the event of market failure to encumber further damage being inflicted onto the economy. However, the noncompetitive business control acts are not in my estimation deterring businesses from ill practices enough. The yard go-ahead is crotchety at outmatch considering most households chiefly are in bullheadedness of two cars compared to just a adept vehicle a few(prenominal) days ago. intelligibly more inescapably to be done to cheer the environment. Although high accelerator pedal prices and an increase in amends act as a stay to some the neediness of alternatives is evil to the efforts. A higher tax should be implemented on tobacco as it is causes contradict externalities which not only affect the individual but also the government, NHS overstep on medium fin billion a course on treating diseases straightaway caused by gage (Buckley,2003). 9.
